VAN BUREN -- Many homeowners in Onondaga County should brace for significant increases in property taxes as a result of the Onondaga County budget passed by the legislature on Tuesday.

The county has just released the new tax rates. Hardest hit is the Town of Van Buren, with a property tax increase of 78%. But, in neighboring Geddes, property taxes will go down by 27%.

The county budget reflects a decrease in overall spending, but because of a redistribution of sales tax which takes revenue away from most townships, homeowners will see an increase in property taxes. The Town of Salina, for instance, expects to see a 46.9% increase in property taxes or about $115 dollars more on a $100,000 home.
