SYRACUSE -- It was a slow, slippery commute for Central New Yorkers this morning.

The first round of the major winter storm predicted for much of the country hit Syracuse with snow beginning to fall sometime before 5:00 am.  We initially only had about nine school districts that closed or delayed the start of classes this morning, mostly to the south and west of Syracuse.

The Onondaga County 911 Center dispatched emergency crews to close to two dozen accidents scattered around the county this morning.  Among them an accident involving a school bus on West Genesee Street in Solvay just west of the Westcott Reservoir. There were three people on the First Student bus when it slid into a ditch. We are told there were no injuries.

Even without accidents a check of New York State DOT traffic cameras shows slow going on most highways in the area.

Airlines have already canceled thousands of flights in advance of the main part of the storm.  It is a good idea to check with your airline before heading to the airport.

So far the FAA is reporting that for flights out of Hancock Airport the only serious delay is in Philadelphia. From the FAA web site:Due to WX / LOW CEILINGS, departure traffic destined to Philadelphia International Airport, Philadelphia, PA (PHL) is currently experiencing delays averaging 49 minutes.
