SYRACUSE -- More than three dozen local community organizations are joining forces to discuss the future of Interstate 81.
The I-81 Community Liaison Committee (CLC) is comprised of 37 local organizations to provide input on community ideas, needs and concerns regarding the future of the Interstate.
Portions of the highway are nearing the end of their lifespan, and there has been widespread discussion about potentially tearing down the elevated sections of the highway in downtown Syracuse.
"The future of I-81 represents one the most important infrastructure and economic development projects in our region", said James D'Agostino, Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council Director. "The citizens of the Syracuse region have an opportunity to reevaluate the needs and desires of those who use I-81 and live or work in the area, and to help formulate a plan that will best serve our city and region in the years to come."
The newly-formed committee will serve as a conduit to exchange information about what to do with 81. The group is expected to meet about three times a year over the next year and will:
*Disseminate information about The I-81 Challenge to their constituents
*Provide input on community concerns
*Ensure diverse points of view are represented
*Give feedback on materials and methods for public involvement
The group will not make any decisions about what ultimately happens to 81.
