Updated forecast as of midday: Looking at the latest information, this very sharp gradient of snowfall will continue to cause a tough forecast across much of Central New York. I still believe the worst weather will occur over the southern Finger Lakes, far southern tier and far western New York. This is where the steadiest snow will fall.

Locally, there will be over 6" of snow in these southern and western locations. Latest computer model information indicates lower snowfall totals for the immediate Central New York region, including the Thruway corridor and Syracuse, Rome, and Utica. Even areas around Route 20 will see lower amounts than I had indicated before.

I have updated my 2 snowfall forecast graphics. Click on them below for my updated forecast for total snow by 8:00 am Thursday:

Winter storm warnings remain in effect for all of the Finger Lakes region and much of the central and southern tier through tonight. Winter weather advisories are in effect for the immediate Syracuse, Utica, Rome, Fulton, and Oswego areas and the counties bordering Lake Ontario. The heaviest snow during the day and through tonight will occur roughly from about the Route 20 corridor southbound across much of the Finger Lakes and southern tier of our area.

It is important to remember that higher elevations, lawns and car hoods and roofs will have larger accumulations versus highway roads and blacktop.  Since it is late March, solar insolation will help to melt some of the snow as it hits the pavement.

This storm has covered a large piece of real estate. This will be large and impactful storm for many parts of the country. If you have travel plans between Tuesday and Wednesday, flights may be cancelled. You will want to call ahead to your airline and also keep an eye on this website for potential airport problems.

In case you are wondering how Syracuse is doing for its seasonal snow total compared to the top 5 all time since 1951, here is the list before the snow starts:

Top 5 Snowfall at Hancock Airport
1. 192.1" (1992-1993)
2. 191.9" (2000-2001)
3. 181.3" (2003-2004)
4. 174.2" (2010-2011)
5. 170.9" (1995-1996)
