SYRACUSE (AP) -- State lawmakers expect to take up legislation this week to create a new government body that will transform Syracuse Hancock International Airport from a city-run operation to a state-run authority with the goal of bringing more competitive air travel to central New York.

Republican Senator John DeFrancisco says a floor vote is possible in the Senate this week. He and Assembly sponsor Bill Magnarelli both expect the legislation to pass.

The authority would take the airport from the control of the Syracuse mayor and put it in the hands of a regional board. Hancock is the only major airport in New York that isn't operated by an authority.

Supporters say the change would make it easier to reduce operating costs and attract new service, particularly from low-fare airlines.
