AUBURN -- Around 100 people showed up to Auburn's City Hall to protest the city's policy of accepting wastewater from natural gas drilling.
Folks are calling for a moratorium on accepting the wastewater because they say the city's water treatment facility cannot properly and safely handle it, warning it could pose a significant risk to drinking water.
The Cayuga Anti-Fracking Alliance organized a protest outside of city hall prior to Thursday night's city council meeting. Alliance founder Terry Cuddy says preserving the region's clean water is the number one concern.
"Water quality is the most important part of the Finger Lakes region, and we want to keep our water safe from natural gas drilling wastewater," Cuddy says.
Auburn Mayor Michael Quill tells CNY Central's Brian Mueller that he is in favor of a moratorium on accepting such wastewater, but does not know if the city is contractually obligated to halt the water treatment.
