SULLIVAN, MADISON CO. -- Westbound traffic on the Thruway in Central New York has reopened after a tractor-trailer fire snarled traffic for hours Friday afternoon.

State Police say the fire was reported shortly after noon Friday in the westbound lanes of Interstate 90 between exits 34 and 34A in the Madison County town of Sullivan, 15 miles east of Syracuse.

The blaze shut down both westbound lanes between the two exits for much of the afternoon. The Thruway Authority says just before 4:00 p.m. that the left lane reopened, and just before 5:00 p.m. both lanes were cleared.

Troopers had diverted westbound motorists off the highway at Exit 33 in Oneida County and onto local roads.
