Police close investigation on deadly DWI crash with Amish van

BENTON, YATES COUNTY -- The man police say caused a crash that killed six Amish people last month is back in jail.

Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike says Steven Eldridge has finished his evaluation at the Rochester Psychiatric Center is was returned to jail last week.

Eldridge is charged with six counts of criminally negligent homicide and DWI. Officers say she was drunk when he tried to pass a farm tractor in the town of Benton, on the west side of Seneca Lake. Police say Eldridge hit a van full of Amish people, pushing the van under the tractor.

Spike says the police investigation is done and the findings have been turned over to the Yates County District Attorney. He says he case will be presented to a grand jury.

Eldridge is being held in the Yates County Jail on $125,000 bail.
