SALINA, ONONDAGA COUNTY -- Dozens of local employees face layoffs in upcoming weeks due to cut backs in government contracts as the economic downturn continues.
85 employees from Lockheed Martin are to be notified of layoffs by September 30, and will leave by October 14, a company representative said.
The layoffs will impact hourly and salaried employees, union and non-union, at the Salina facility.
"This action was necessary to appropriately balance staffing levels to current and projected future workload demands," said Ken Casarsa, a Communications Representative from Lockheed Martin. "As the government continues to revise its acquisition strategies and delay contract awards, we need to take actions based on business realities and focused on tightly controlling costs in order to remain as affordable as possible in an extremely competitive marketplace.”
Casarsa told CNY Central that number of layoffs could potentially decrease if some employees find work on other company projects, at other locations, or retire.
The Salina plant will employ approximately 2,250 people following the layoffs.
