Four Syracuse men were arrested for criminal possession of a weapon and stolen property.

Syracuse Police say officers Ryan Jones-Brimmer and Jeremy Baldwin were on patrol in the area of Salt Springs Road, Audubon Parkway, and Mountainview Avenue due to a well documented dispute between two men identified as Charvin Turner and Shawn Nelson who have allegedly been involved several reported shootings.

Police say the officers were parked at 1130 Salt Springs Rd., when officers noticed and approached a silver colored car parked on Salisbury Park Drive.

As the officers approached the vehicle, it sped away. The car had a Maryland License plate with four passengers.

Police say the suspect vehicle then turned into the driveway of 104 Gorland Ave. When the officers approached the vehicle, they say they smelled a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle.

Police told CNY Central that when officers removed the passengers from the car, they uncovered some marijuana and a stolen, loaded Smith and Wesson M&P .45 caliber, semi-automatic handgun, which had an extended magazine and a piece of circular fabric mounted to the right side of weapon near the ejection port. Police say this shell catcher is commonly used by criminals so that shell casings are not left at the scene of a shooting and can’t be used as evidence.

The four passengers, Travon Wynn, 24, Shawn Nelson, 23, John Jones, 19, and Jemmell Grainger, 23, were each charged with second degree criminal possession of a weapon and fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property. Jones and Grainger face additional charges of unlawful possession of marijuana. Nelson, the suspect driver, was as issued uniform traffic tickets for an unsafe start and not using a turn signal.

At the time of the arrest, police say Nelson was out of jail on bail from an earlier arrest in April when he was found in a car that had four loaded handguns. Nelson has previously confessed to being involved in at least three incidents in which he shot at Charvin Turner, and pled guilty to the charges. Nelson’s bail was revoked as a result of these new charges.

All four defendants were arraigned in Syracuse City Court and are being held in the Onondaga County Justice Center.
