Higher elevations seeing accumulation
The first widespread cold of the Central New York autumn is bringing accumulating snow to areas of higher elevation. Our CNYCentral Facebook page is displaying snow photos uploaded from places like Lafayette, Pompey and Moravia. The Adirondacks have been getting snow since sunrise this morning and have accumulated as much as three or four inches in some areas.
CNYCentral Meteorologist Mike Brookins says the cold weather season is a little behind schedule. Typically by this date we already have had .2 of an inch of snow measured at Hancock Airport. We also usually get the first wide spread freeze of the season by October 16th. That has not yet happened, but is expected tonight when Syracuse area temperatures drop to 29 degrees. Lows in outlying areas like the Tug Hill could drop near 20.
Brookins says the system bringing the rain and the light snow is expected to move out of the area overnight. Higher elevations with significant accumulation could still have snow on the ground in the morning. Other areas not hit as hard will see it quickly melt on the warm ground.
Syracuse area Thursday evening commuters could see flurries flying in the air, but will not see accumulating snow.
