TOWN OF SALINA -- In a close vote, Salina residents decided against a plan to consolidate the town hall and highway facility in a new building.

The proposition was defeated 2,698 to 2,532. Under the proposal, the town would have bought the building that Chevy is moving out of on Old Liverpool Road

Salina Town Supervisor Mark Nicotra proposed the plan, saying the town hall needs rehabilitating, and the highway facility needs to be rebuilt.

The estimated cost of the project is $5.9 million. Nicotra maintained consolidating the departments into a new building, instead of doing rehab work on both current buildings, would have saved taxpayers about $2 million. He estimated the project would have cost taxpayers $15 to $20 on a $100,000 home.

Several open houses were held over the last several weeks to give voters a chance to look at the facilities and their conditions before Election Day.

But apparently, it wasn't enough to convince voters to vote "yes" on the proposition.

So, what happens next? Is the proposal dead in the water or is there still life? Leave a comment below and let us know what you think.
