CLAY -- A Clay man admits he was huffing chemical fumes when he hit and killed a Liverpool High School student back in October.
20-year-old Aaron Sakran, of 4225 Inverrary Drive, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Onondaga County Court Monday morning. Sakran admits he inhaled fumes from an aerosol can of keyboard cleaner shortly before hitting 19-year-old Joseph Ozimek III along Route 57 in Clay on October 5. Ozimek, a senior at Liverpool High School, was walking home from his job at McDonalds when he was killed. Deputies say Ozimek's body was thrown several feet and his shoes were found nearby. A Centro bus driver found the teen's body lying on the side of the road.
Deputies say Sakran, an Onondaga Community College student, was at Wegman's on Oswego Road and driving a 2004 Chrysler Sebring with a suspended license. Sakran's attorney has said his client thought he hit debris, but didn't realize it was a person until his father saw the damage to the car and told him about the incident on the news.
As part of the plea, prosecutors agreed to seek a prison sentence of 2 1/3 to 7 years instead of the possible maximum 15 years behind bars.
Sakran will be sentenced on January 9.
