SHERRILL (AP) -- Prosecutors have refused to accept an insanity plea from a man accused of stabbing to death his girlfriend's 6-year-old daughter at their home in central New York.

A defense attorney maintains that David Trebilcock was mentally ill when he killed Lauen Belius on July 19. He said Jesus Christ made him stab her.

Prosecutor Dawn Catera Lupi told a judge Thursday she would not accept an insanity plea, and the court ordered Trebilcock to stand trial for murder and assault on February 6.

The Post-Standard in Syracuse reports that Allison Belius told police she awoke to the sound of her twin daughters screaming for help.

She found the door to their bedroom barricaded and forced her way inside to find Trebilcock stabbing Lauren with a five-inch steak knife.
