BINGHAMTON (AP) -- Authorities are investigating the death of a man found dead in an upstate New York creek bed after going missing during New Year celebrations.

Broome County Sheriff David Harder says 21-year-old David Fillers of Dickinson was in downtown Binghamton, got separated from friends and was last in contact but apparently OK at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday. Family and friends reported him missing later in the day.

His body was found just after 5:00 a.m. Monday by police searching behind a motel in the town of Vestal, 4 miles west of the city near Binghamton University.

Harder says Fillers' death is considered suspicious, but investigators won't know how he died until after an autopsy.

He asked anyone with information about Fillers' travels, or who he was with, to contact police.
