Oswego ice rescue training

OSWEGO -- The mild weather this winter has made for some dangerously thin ice.
The Oswego Fire Department is warning residents to stay off the ice. They are also teaming up with the Coast Guard to make sure they are prepared if someone falls through the ice and needs to be rescued.
Emergency responders from both the Coast Guard and the fire department gathered on the Oswego River for ice rescue training Wednesday morning. They did drills beneath the Utica Street bridge on the Oswego River.
Teams wearing special waterproof suits practiced ways to quickly and safely perform ice rescues.
Just last week firefighters and the Coast Guard teamed up to rescue a man who had fallen into Lake Ontario near the breakwall.
They say when it comes to cold water rescue, it is critical to get to the victim before hypothermia sets in.
