BUFFALO (AP) -- Former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly and his wife, Jill, have unveiled a new research facility devoted to battling the rare disorder that took the life of their son, Hunter.

The Hunter James Kelly Research Institute in Buffalo is a collaboration between the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and the Hunter's Hope foundation.

The couple created the foundation in 1997 after their son, Hunter, was diagnosed with Krabbe Disease, a genetic disorder of the central nervous system.

Hunter died in 2005 when he was 8 years old.

The institute will coordinate research into Krabbe and similar disorders. The Kellys hosted the first tour of the new facility Thursday.
