BERNHARDS BAY, OSWEGO CO. -- A huge fire at the McIntosh Box & Pallet Company in Bernhards Bay has now been put out.
It was a massive effort to get the fire under control. More than 30 fire departments from Oswego, Onondaga, Oneida and Madison Counties responded to the scene. The Town of Cleveland's fire chief says it was one of the worst he's ever witnessed.
Crews at the scene tell CNY Central that firefighters had to stay overnight to make sure flames did not reignite.
It was tough for crews to get water onto the flames. Dozens of tankers lined State Route 49 where the fire erupted. Hoses had to be linked up just to pump water into the building.
Firefighters say it took a total of two hours to get flames under control. There is extensive damage to the backside of the building.
The CEO of McIntosh tells CNY Central that dozens of workers impacted by the flames will be able to transfer to other buildings inside the company.
When the fire first sparked, smoke could be seen from across Oneida Lake in Cicero.
Luckily there were no injuries reported. Route 49 was closed for hours between County Route 17 and Johnson Road to allow firefighters to work at the scene.
