SYRACUSE -- An Honor Guard has welcomed the body of Ithaca Marine Corporal Christopher Bordoni back to central New York at Syracuse's Hancock Airport.
People lined the route in the Syracuse area, but also in Ithaca near the Bangs Funeral Home.
"What we're doing here today can do nothing to bring him back, but maybe can be some comfort to the family and show the respect of the Ithaca community, the central New York region and the country for Cpl. Christopher Bordoni's service to our country, paying the ultimate price," said Guy Van Benschoten of the Ithaca Fire Department.
The procession left Hancock International Airport in Syracuse at approximately 6:15 p.m. and followed this route:
Route 81 South to the Ithaca/Cortland Exit and Route 281. Route 281 South to Route 13. Route 13 South through Cortland, Dryden, Ithaca to the Stewart Park Exit in the City of Ithaca. The procession will continue south on Cayuga Street to Seneca Street, west, to Plain Street, south, to Green Street, east, completing the journey at Bangs Funeral Home.
Calling hours for Marine Corporal Christopher Bordoni will be held Wednesday from 2-7 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church on North Geneva Street in Ithaca. His funeral will be held Thursday morning. Corporal Bordoni will then be buried privately at Calvary Cemetery.
Corporal Bordoni's mother-in-law tells the Ithaca Journal he died last Tuesday night at the San Antonio Military Medical Center. The 21-year-old had been in critical condition at the Texas hospital after being injured Jan. 18 in Helmand province.
