NEW YORK (AP) -- Mitt Romney has done what he was expected to do by winning New York's Republican presidential primary.
With little suspense, Romney easily outdistanced Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich and took home a big chunk of delegates in a race marked by low turnout around the heavily Democratic state.
Even with incomplete results still unofficial late Tuesday night, Romney led by about 40 percentage points. Rick Santorum stopped campaigning two weeks ago.
Romney also won primaries in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, and Pennsylvania Tuesday night.
Romney will have a harder time here in November. New York state has 2.8 million registered Republicans, compared with 5.6 million registered Democrats and when he won the presidency in 2008, Barack Obama defeated John McCain in the state by 62 percent to 37 percent.
