Central New Yorkers are reacting to President Obama's comments regarding gay marriage. In an interview Wednesday, the president said he believes a same sex couple should have the right to marry.
At least one gay couple says this is a moment they've been waiting for. Bob Metzler and John Carolus live in Syracuse and were married 2 1/2 years ago in Vermont.
They say over the past few years, it seems more and more people are accepting of their relationship. They say hearing a show of support from the president, too, is overwhelming.
"It was remarkable," says Carolus. "He's on our side."
"He's acknowledging the fact that we all should have the same civil rights, regardless of our preference, whether we're gay, bisexual, transgender, because we live in the United States of America, the best and biggest country in the world," says Metzler.
However, some people say they believe marriage should only be between a man and a woman, and they say they were disappointed to hear the president's comments.
"It's not about hating people or disliking anyone, some of my best friends are that way, and I've had some very good acquaintances that were homosexual, but I firmly believe that marriage is between a man and a woman," says Jeffery Worsley, who lives in Syracuse.
