OSWEGO -- An Oswego City Councilman is proposing an ordinance to get tough with the owners of swimming pools in the face of the EEE virus threat.

Councilor Eric Van Buren wants to put the owners of abandoned swimming pools on notice that they either need to be fixed up or removed. The proposed regulation gives property owners 30 days to dismantle an abandoned or unused pool.

For pool owners who are not properly maintaining their pools, Van Buren's ordinance includes a 10 day compliance period.

Following the death of 4-year-old Maggie Wilcox last summer from nearby New Haven, Oswego County has come up with a plan to combat the spread of the mosquito borne Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus.

The county is trying to convince residents to do away with pools of water that become breeding grounds for infected mosquitoes. Oswego's City Council is expected to vote on Monday to schedule a public hearing on Van Buren's proposed ordinance.
