WATERLOO (AP) -- An upstate New York man accused of driving off after hitting and killing a pedestrian has been arrested on a felony charge.

State police say 53-year-old John S. Smith of Waterloo was charged Tuesday after investigators determined his pickup truck hit 30-year-old Stephen Hilyer, also of Waterloo.

Hilyer was walking on Routes 5 and 20 in his hometown when he was run over just after midnight on May 21. His body was found in the road and troopers began the search that led Smith's truck, which had front-end damage.

Smith was arraigned on a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident and is being held with bail. Court officials weren't available to provide information on whether he has a lawyer.
