ANTWERP -- A Jefferson County man is facing animal cruelty charges after police say he left his dogs unattended in a hot storage building.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, on Monday deputies arrested 51-year-old Mitchell J. Helberg of Church Street in Adams on two counts of animal cruelty. Helberg is accused of “failing to provide proper sustenance to two pit bulls” who were left in a storage building on Pulpit Rock Road in Antwerp. Deputies say the dogs were left in “extreme heat conditions” for an unknown length of time without clean water, causing the dogs to be distressed.

Helberg is scheduled to appear in Antwerp Town Court on July 3 to answer the charges.
