SODUS (AP) -- Authorities say a state trooper's bulletproof vest saved him from serious injuries when he was stabbed in the chest by a suicidal teenager in Central New York.

State police say Trooper Eric Weingartner responded late Sunday night to a report of a suicidal teen at a home in the Wayne County village of Sodus, 25 miles east of Rochester.

Officials say Weingartner determined that the 14-year-old boy should be transported for a mental evaluation. Police say the teen then took a knife that he had been concealing and stabbed the trooper in the chest.

Officials say Weingartner was uninjured because of his bulletproof vest.

The teen was charged with attempted aggravated assault of a police officer and sent to a Rochester hospital for a mental health evaluation.
