CLYMER -- The school superintendent of a small western New York town has been found fatally shot at his home in what authorities say is an apparent homicide.

Officials in the Chautauqua County town of Clymer say they were stunned to learn Monday of the death of 51-year-old Superintendent Keith Reed Jr.

Reed was a former high school principal in the Sherburne-Earlville Central School District in Chenango County. According to the Utica Observer-Dispatch, Reed left the district just last year.

He previously worked as an administrator at schools in the Elmira area and in Chenango and Steuben counties.

Reed has been superintendent of Clymer and its 468 students since November 2011. Principal Ed Bailey says Reed was well-liked and that he's shocked by news of his death.

A vigil will be held for the small-town school superintendent who was found shot to death outside his western New York home.

Clymer is a rural, agricultural community of about 1,500 people in the southwest corner of New York, near the Pennsylvania border.
