CANASTOTA -- Thursday was a special day in Canastota for some very special athletes.

More than 200 kids from across Madison and Oneida counties turned out for this year’s Special Olympics Autumn Games at Canastota High School.

The athletes competed in track and field events and there were also adapted activities for those athletes needing a little extra help.

Volunteers say the best thing about the Special Olympics is that everyone is a winner.

"This extraordinary local event will allow the public to experience the excitement and joy that this special day will bring to our talented athletes," said Laurie Ann Ross, assistant director for alternative education at Madison-Oneida BOCES and a volunteer organizer for the Autumn Games.

In addition to the athletic events, this years Special Olympics also had an Olympic Village with arts and crafts.
