SYRACUSE (AP) --

Authorities say two people are dead and two others are hospitalized after a two-vehicle collision on a Syracuse-area highway.

Police are now saying the accident may have been caused by faulty windshield wipers.

State Trooper Jack Keller confirms Monday that two people in one of the vehicles were killed in the crash, which occurred around 12:40 a.m. Monday in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 690 near the John Glenn Boulevard interchange in the town of Geddes, just northwest of Syracuse.

At around 12:30 am, a Pontiac driving East on 690 lost control and hit a concrete barrier.

The vehicle ended up in the passing lane where it was hit by another car.

The passenger in the front seat of the Pontiac, 21 year old Ryan Misener of Liverpool, was killed in the crash.

There will be a candlelight vigil in Misener's memory from 3:30 until 6:30 today in the Butterfly Garden at Onondaga Lake Park.

The Pontiac’s driver was also killed, but police have not yet released that person’s name.

A third passenger, 28 year old Joseph Clayton of Liverpool, is in critical condition at Upstate Medical Center with severe head trauma and internal injuries.

The driver of the second car, 25 year old David Grice of Fulton, is in serious condition with a broken back.

I-690's eastbound lanes were closed until around 7:45 a.m. as police investigated the crash.
