Police investigate the scene at 221 West Street Friday morning

SYRACUSE -- A young boy is recovering after his father was killed during a robbery in their Syracuse home early Friday morning.
Syracuse Police held a news conference Friday to discuss details of a home invasion homicide that took place on the city’s south side. Police say around 1:45 a.m. Onondaga County 911 received a report of shots fired at 221 West Kennedy Street. When officers arrived they found 65-year-old Jerry Mack dead. Witnesses say three suspects, described by witnesses as “dark skinned men”, were seen entering the home and attacking Mack, apparently as part of a robbery.
Police say Mack’s seven-year-old son, who lived in the home, was inside at the time of the murder. They say the boy is “traumatized” by the events, and officers are working with him.
Police added that the 911 call came from a home on Croton Terrace, which is a few blocks from the crime scene. They say that Mack’s son was found walking along the street, and picked up by a person who took the child to his grandmother’s house on Croton. That’s when the grandmother called for help.
Police say the cause of death has not been determined pending an autopsy. They say Mack had no criminal history.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Syracuse Police at 315-442-5222. They say they are still collecting evidence, and are especially interested in hearing from the individual who picked up Mack’s son and brought him to his grandmother’s house.
