SYRACUSE -- Hundreds of shoppers crowded the aisles of the newly opened Tops Friendly Market in the Valley Plaza on Syracuse's far south side Tuesday. The supermarket officially opened its doors after a $2 million dollar renovation of the former P&C market which closed 4 years ago.

According to Tops Regional Vice President Mike Patti, the store employs 140 people including 120 new hires from the Syracuse area.

Patti says the Valley Plaza location has many of the same features that are planned for the Tops market on Syracuse's north side. Patti says the former Wegman's on Pond Street is undergoing reconstruction. He expects to open the new store in early January.

Tops now operates 152 supermarkets in New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont.
