Silver Star award winner Sgt. Michael Ross and family in Georgia.
The United States Army has honored a soldier who grew up in Liverpool with the third highest honor for valor. Sgt. Michael Ross received the Silver Star in a ceremony late last week in Georgia. Ross is an Army Ranger, stationed in Savannah, Georgia. He has deployed 6 times to both Iraq and Afghanistan over the last several years.
A ceremony recognized Rangers from the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond Odierno, one of the nation's top ranking soldiers, led the proceedings.
"It really is an incredible honor that was bestowed upon him," said Doug Ross. Sgt. Ross' parents and sister joined him in Georgia to witness the medal ceremony.
Silver Star Award winner Sgt. Michael Ross not only fought but protected a mortally wounded Ranger in Afghanistan.
"You do not really have much time to think. You have to act. That is all we can do. The best thing about being here is you know that anyone in this formation that was behind us earlier would have done the same thing. It is just being in that situation. Any Ranger out here is deserving of any of these awards," said Ross.
The Army honored Sgt. Ross for his actions on April 14, 2012 in Logar Province where he "selflessly and with no regard for his own personal safety, prevented further injury to an already wounded ranger by placing himself over the body of a wounded teammate inside of effective enemy fire from superior positions. Sergeant Ross, still under fire, moved a fellow ranger to the only cover available and remained in an exposed position over his body while returning fire and waiting for support from his fellow rangers. Sergeant Ross' distinctive accomplishments are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service."
