SCRIBA (AP) -- The owner of a nuclear plant in northern New York says it shut down automatically when a device failed that controls the water level in the vessel that holds the plant's nuclear fuel.
Jill Lyon, a spokeswoman for Constellation Energy Nuclear Group, says there was no risk to public safety and no release of radiation into the air or water.
She tells the Syracuse Post-Standard that the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station Unit 1 shut down automatically Saturday morning when instruments detected too much water in the reactor pressure vessel. The plant is about 35 miles north of Syracuse.
Officials have returned the water level to normal and now are trouble-shooting to find why the control failed. Workers then will make repairs and perform tests before restarting the reactor.
