CANASTOTA -- Two local organizations team up to lend a paw to the pets affected by Super Storm Sandy. Wanderers' Rest and the Second Chance Thrift Shoppe are collecting pet supplies, including pet food, blankets, pillows, litter, pet toys, collars and leashes for our furry friends downstate.

Next week, volunteers will drive the supplies down to Suffolk and Nassau counties on Long Island.

Wanderers' Rest Executive Director Mark Christensen says the idea started at the Second Chance Thrift Shoppe, as it was collecting clothes for the people who suffered damages in Sandy's wake.

Christensen is from Long Island, and knew the storm took a toll on cats and dogs too.

"I have a ton of friends that are still there, and the devastation is just incredible," he says.

Wanderers' Rest started collecting items this weekend. Already, it's seen a tremendous display of generosity from the people of Central New York.

"There's been an outpouring of support for all these animals that need assistance, so we're going to do what we can to help out, as small as it may be," Christensen says.

Both locations are accepting items through next Saturday, November 17th. Non-perishable items for volunteers are also welcome.

Bring supplies to Wanderers' Rest on Sutherland Drive off Route 5 in Canastota, or to the Second Chance Thrift Shoppe on Route 20 in Bouckville.
