MADISON COUNTY -- The Madison County Sheriff's Department says a car accident that brought down a utility pole plunged an estimated 2,000 power customers into the dark Monday evening. And the storm recovery downstate means there is not a local National Grid pole crew available to fix it.
The power outage is likely to persist into Tuesday. Madison County Undersheriff John Ball tells CNYcentral, "I've spoken with the fire chief and at this point we know that there is a crew about to head back from New York City, but getting them here will take some time."
The crash happened at the intersection of Route 13 and Carey Road, just north of DeRuyter. No one was hurt in the accident, but the utlity pole is down. Route 13 in that area will be closed until at least 6 a.m. Tuesday morning.
During the time the power is off, the Madison County Sheriff's office will have some extra parols on duty. Also, anyone who does not have telephone service and needs to report an emergency should go to the DeRuyter Fire Department. There is a pull box outside the fire house and that will alert authorities.
Power was restored early around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday morning.
