DEWITT (AP) -- A factory in central New York that made transmissions until earlier this year has been sold.

The Syracuse Post-Standard reports the former New Process Gear site was sold to ONX1 LLC by Syracuse Properties LLC for $2.45 million.

The future use of the property isn't initially clear. Public records show ONX1 is based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

New Process employed about 4,000 workers at its peak making car and truck parts. But it had been losing money for years. Its Canadian owner, Magna International, decided in 2009 to close the factory after unionized workers rejected contract concessions.

The company produced hardened rawhide for use in gears when it was founded in 1888. In 1913, the name was changed to New Process Gear as it switched to making metal automotive gears.
