WATERTOWN -- Police in northern New York are attempting to figure out how three cemetery headstones dating back more than 150 years ended up along the side of a local road.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office tells the Watertown Daily Times that a woman walking along a Watertown road made the discovery Monday morning.

Police say the 4-foot-tall, 150-pound gravestones were among some construction debris.

The dates of death on the headstones range from 1851 to 1860. Two of the stones have names, but the information on the third isn't legible.

Police were able to determine that two of headstones originally were placed in separate Watertown cemeteries. The third's original place remains a mystery.

A cemetery manager says the headstones may have been stored in someone's basement after being replaced by newer grave markers.
