CANANDAIGUA (AP) -- Authorities say more than two dozen cats and dogs have died in a fire at a dog breeder's home in western New York.

The Ontario County Sheriff's Office tells local media that the fire was reported around 11 p.m. Monday at the Canandaigua home of 66-year-old Harold Power and 55-year-old Lori Hicks, who breeds Alaskan malamute dogs at the house.

Firefighters were called back to the home around 5 a.m. Tuesday when the fire reignited.

A smoke detector woke Hicks, who managed to save seven malamutes and two cats while firefighters saved another dog. But seven adult dogs, 12 puppies and seven cats died in the blaze.

Hicks and Power were treated at the Canandaigua hospital for smoke inhalation and released.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
