SCHROEPPEL -- Authorities say three sheriff's deputies are recovering from injuries suffered when they disarmed a man swinging a hatchet at motorists on a central New York road.
The Oswego County Sheriff's Office tells local media the deputies were called to Route 10 in the town of Schroeppel Wednesday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. for a report of a man who was acting erratically and swinging a hatchet at passing motorists.
The deputies ordered 55-year-old James Rogers of Pennellville to drop the weapon, but officials say he failed to comply. The deputies used pepper spray on Rogers when he moved aggressively toward them.
Police say that as a result of analtercation, three deputies were injured. The injured deputies were treated and released from the hospital. Rogers was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.
The charges against Rogers include aggravated assault on a police officer, menacing a police officer, and resisting arrest. It couldn't be determined if he had a lawyer.
The investigation is continuing and Sheriff’s investigators ask anyone with further information to call 349-3411.
Rogers was arrested two weeks ago after police found 32 pounds of marijuana, metal knuckles, two long guns, a scale, packaging and $4,200 in cash in his home.
