TOWN OF COLUMBIA, HERKIMER COUNTY -- A Richfield Springs man died when a car crashed into his wheelchair on a Herkimer County road.

State Police in Herkimer County say they are investigating the car-pedestrian crash in the Town of Columbia. It happened around 4:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say 55-year-old Maureen Meyerhoff, of Richfield Springs, was driving southbound on State Route 28.

As she approached McKoons Road, 49-year-old George Hotaling, who was operating his motorized wheelchair, entered the road from the west shoulder. Police say Meyerhoff was unable to avoid a collision and struck the wheelchair, ejecting Hotaling.

Police say Hotaling was air lifted to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown where he succumbed to his injuries.
