UTICA (AP) -- A former New York city man has admitted to fatally shooting a 35-year-old man outside an upstate bar last summer.

Local media outlets report that 42-year-old Jemal Gadson, formerly of Brooklyn, pleaded guilty Thursday in Oneida County Court to shooting Jermaine Stubbs six times on July 23 outside a Utica bar where the two men had a confrontation.

Gadson was arrested several weeks later in North Carolina.

He had been charged with second-degree murder but pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in exchange for a sentence of 20 years in prison. Gadson would have faced up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted of the murder charge.

He's scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 8.
