BALDWINSVILLE -- A Baldwinsville Post Office will be named after a Lysander soldier killed in Afghanistan.
The Post Office will be named after Marine Corporal Kyle Schneider who was killed by an IED in Afghanistan in 2011. "We appreciate this special tribute of honor and remembrance to our beloved Kyle. Thank you to all that made it possible," said Rick and Lorie Schneider.
Schneider grew up in Lysander, and is a 2006 graduate of C.W. Baker High School in Baldwinsville.
U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand had introduced the legislation to re-name the post office. "Marine Corporal Schneider is truly a hometown hero," said Senator Gillibrand . "He made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, serving with honor, integrity and dignity. Naming the Baldwinsville Post Office after him will honor his legacy in his community."
One month before his death, Schneider was knocked unconscious by an improvised explosive device, but through his determination, was back out with the other Marines within two days. Schneider died in Afghanistan on June 30, 2011 from a second IED.
For Kyle's tour of duty, he received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with "V" Device for Valor, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the ISAF NATO Medal, and he was awarded two Purple Heart Medals.
