The average temperature was warmest since 1902
The year 2012 will go into the record books as the warmest ever recorded. If you take all of the high temperatures and all of the low temperatures for all 366 days of the year (2012 was a leap year) and average them together, you get the “average temperature” for the year. According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, The average temperatures for Syracuse in 2012 was 52.5°. This broke the old record of 51.5° set back in 1931 by a rather large by 1.2° difference. In fact, here are the top 5 warmest years on record (since 1902).

You may recall that this summer was a scorcher! We had 2 fairly impressive weather stats. First, we had 26 days of 90° or higher. This was tied for 2nd all time since 1902. Here is a list of the top 5 years for number of days of 90° for Syracuse:

How does 2013 look? Well, I personally think that seasonal and yearly forecasting is suspect and very unreliable, especially in central New York. Overall, the short term shows below normal temperatures for today. However, expect a return to near to eventually above normal temperatures for the weekend and early next week. The Climate Prediction Center is forecasting a better than even chance for the next 6 to 10 days and the 8 to 14 days outlook to be above normal. The CPC forecast for the month of January shows a better than even chance for above normal temperatures and equal chance for above and below normal temperatures for the next 3 months. I will continue to monitor how the weather changes.
