SYRACUSE -- Police say they've charged a man with murder after a shooting on New Year's Eve on West Onondaga Street in Syracuse.
Syracuse Police say 34-year-old Fred Burgess Jr., a convicted felon, killed 30-year-old David Jones Jr. during an attempted robbery on a city street at about 11:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve.
Police say Jones was alone in an SUV on the 700 block of West Onondaga when Burgess walked up and tried to steal a necklace and cash from Jones.
There was a brief struggle before Burgess shot Jones. Jones was hit by two bullets and succumbed to his injuries at University Hospital.
Burgess was arrested on New Year's Day. He is being held without bail after his arraignment on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree robbery and criminal possession of a weapon. He has pleaded not guilty. His lawyer declined to comment Wednesday.
Police say Burgess has a lengthy criminal history, but aren't releasing those details at this time. Police do not think the two men knew one another, but their investigation continues.
