SYRACUSE (AP) -- Syracuse University is installing a system to collect the rainwater that runs off the 7-acre roof of the Carrier Dome and use it to flush toilets during events at the Dome.

The Syracuse Post-Standard reports that the university received a $1.3 million state grant to install a rainwater collection system at the sports center.

The project is intended as a demonstration of how such systems can conserve municipal water supplies and reduce storm runoff into overloaded wastewater treatment systems.

Onondaga County is under a federal court order to reduce the untreated sewage that spills into Onondaga Lake during heavy rainstorms.

Other rainwater harvesting projects in Syracuse are at Destiny USA mall, the Oncenter, the zoo and the war memorial.
