BINGHAMTON (AP) -- A pro-gas drilling county executive is proposing a new Office of Energy Development in Broome County, which is in the area near the Pennsylvania border most likely to see drilling if Gov. Andrew Cuomo lifts a 4 ½-year-old moratorium.

The Binghamton Press and Sun-Bulletin reports that the county legislature is scheduled to vote Jan. 17 on a resolution to create the office and establish a $200,000 budget for it. The resolution says the office would promote all forms of energy development as well as energy conservation.

Broome County Executive Debbie Preston, a proponent of natural gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing, has discussed plans to create the office several times in recent months.
