DEWITT -- CNY Central has learned the American Eagle store in Shoppingtown Mall in DeWitt will close. We have been told by two employees that the store is closing, though they couldn’t provide more details as to why the decision was made.

American Eagle is currently still listed on the mall’s website as one of its stores and is described as offering “young adult and teen girls and guys high-quality, on-trend clothing, accessories and personal care products at affordable prices.”

The future of Shoppingtown Mall has been in question over the past few years. Just recently, the owners state they were committed to talking with the town, Onondaga County officials and local stakeholders about the long-term future of the mall on Erie Boulevard.

LNR Property took over ownership of the mall in 2011, but until recently the company was unresponsive to various pushes to talk about a plan to redevelop the retail site.

The mall brings in more than $700,000 in property taxes to the county and DeWitt's budget.
