OSWEGO -- The US Coast Guard responded to a report of an unknown object in the waters of Lake Ontario, Ontario just outside of the break wall, on Thursday evening, according to Oswego City Police.

Police say the Coast Guard was dispatched and, as part of their operation, deployed several flares into the sky.

Police say they began receiving phone calls about "strange light sources and/or balls of fire" over Lake Ontario, directly north of the City, around 7:30 p.m. Police contacted the US Coast Guard and learned of the flares.

Officials say the flares did not pose any immediate danger to residents of the area.

The Oswego City Police Department says it has no further information regarding this incident.
