LAPEER, CORTLAND COUNTY -- The Cortland County Sheriff's Department responded to a deadly crash on Route 221 near Clarks Corners Rd in the town of Lapeer at 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Investigators say a 1999 Mercury Cougar was traveling west on Route 221 when it lost control on a curve due to the weather conditions and crossed the center line into the east bound lane. The vehicle was struck by a 2001 International Harvester panel truck. The driver of the Mercury was transported to Cortland Regional Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The passenger of the Mercury was transported to Wilson Memorial in Binghamton, with serious injuries.

The identity of the occupants of the Mercury are pending notification of the family. Neither the driver or the passenger of the International were injured.
