SYRACUSE (AP) -- A veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be the next commander of the New York Army National Guard's Syracuse-based 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

National Guard officials say Lt. Col. Joseph Biehler has been selected to replace Col. Geoffrey Slack, who led the brigade during deployments to the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan the past two years.

Biehler, currently commander of the brigade's 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry, will be promoted to colonel in his new position. He's a 25-year veteran of the National Guard who has led troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Biehler is a Rochester native who lives in the suburb of Webster with his wife and twin sons. In civilian life, he's a manager for the Harris Corp. in Rochester.
