HOMER -- The severely injured stray dog in Cortland County is starting to do better.

The staff at Country Acres Animal Shelter in Homer says "Champ" has gained almost four pounds since being brought into the shelter earlier this week.

His condition is improving enough to where he should be ready for surgery on Monday to amputate his badly infected and damaged back right leg.

Donations from the community have reached about $900 so far. The animal shelter says that's enough to cover most of the cost of the expected surgery on Monday. The animal shelter is still collecting donations towards Champ's care. Donations can be sent directly through the shelter's website.

There is still no information on who owned the dog, or why he may have been a stray for weeks.
